Lavender is much more than just pretty & calming. It is one of the most powerful remedies in the plant world, offering both physical and emotional relief for problems as varied as burns, migraines, insomnia, insect bites, skin problems, infections, stress and nervous tension.

There are over 35 different types of lavender. Lavender has been used since ancient Egyption and Roman times and still used today for hundreds of everyday purposes. It is one of the most widely used scents in the world.
Around the time of the First World War 1914, diluted lavender oil was being used in hospitals to heals wounds, minimise infection and disinfect hospital floors. By the 1940's when penicillin was introduced the use of lavender oil in hospitals declined.

Want nice smelling clothes? Fill a cotton/muslin bag with dried lavender flowers and put the bag into your clothes dryer at the begining of the cycle, this will be able to be used lots until the flowers smell no longer or place the bag in your clothes draws. Another option is to add 2-3 drops of lavender oil to a clean lint-free rag/cloth and put in the dryer at the begining of the cycle.
Linen cupboard: Fill a cotton/muslin bag with dried lavender flowers and put the bag into your linen cupboard. Not only will your linen smell nice but it will also help keep away moths and silver fish.
Smelly carpets? Carpet freshner: Mix 6 cups of baking soda, 3 cups of lavender flowers, 1 cup of cornflour in a sealed container. Leave in container for at least 3 days. Sprinkle mix onto carpet and leave for an hour then vacuum.

How to use laveder oil basics: apply a few drops in a warm bath, add a couple of drops to a tissue and place under pillow for sleep, add a few drops to a carrier oil like sweet almond or sunflower oil and rub/massage into skin, apply a drop or two direct onto skin (say for a bite), put a cotton bud under water then add a drop or two to bud and apply to skin, add a few drops in some water to a oil burner. Can be applied net (direct) onto the skin -although not reccommend for babies or sensitive skin to apply direct.

Air freshener: Add 20 dropsof lavender oil into a 250ml sprayer bottle, fill the rest of the bottle with water - always shake the bottle before use.
Laundry: Add a couple of drops of lavender oil to washing machine for nice smelling laundry.
All purpose Cleaner: Add 15 drops of lavender oil, 15 drops of tea tree oil, 150mls water, 75mls white to a 250ml spray bottle. Shake before each use, spray and wipe away. For window/glass: shake, spray, wipe clean then use a dry cloth to do a final wipe.
Need to relax? Pure essential Lavender oil has long been recognised to help calm and relax. Add a couple of drops to a tissue and put under your pillow for a great night sleep, or add a few drops to a warm bath, or oil burner top up with water.
Fabric softener: In a clean easy to pour bottle (500mls), nearly fill with white vinegar then add 20-30 drops of lavender oil. Pour 1/8 cup into the fabric softener section of your washing machine. Shake bottle before each use.
Floor washing: Add 30 drops of lavender oil to a backet of hot water and wash floors as usual. This not only will disinfect your floors but make the place smell nice too. For very dirty floors add 1-2 cups of white vinegar to the bucket as well.
Headaches: Add 1-4 drops of lavender oil to one table spoon of carrier oil (sweet almond or sunflower oils) and rub into your temples and forehead. Or add 2-4 drops of lavender oil to 1 cup of boiling water and inhale the vapours.
Trouble sleeping? Add 2-3 drops of lavender oil to a tissue and place under your pillow. Or fill a sprayer bottle with water and add 20 drops of lavender oil, shake before use and spray onto bedding just before ironing.
Lavender Bath: For a fill bath add 20-30 drops of lavender oil. Great for relaxing, soothing aches and pains, healing and promoting good sleep.
